Leave it to big food companies tomake even their healthier options problematic. In response to the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act (a 2010 Federal act which is now under Republican scrutiny) Domino’s pizza created the Smart Slice.
It is not necessarily more nutritious, it just has less of the bad stuff in it (½ of the fat in the cheese, 1/3 of the fat in the meat, 1/3 of the sodium in the sauce) but the real problem, according to Michael Moss of the New York Times, is that when a Smart Slice comes to a school so does a Domino’s box, a Domino’s poster, a Domino’s cup, and a hankering for an after school snack of, you guessed it, Domino’s. Infact, this is a trend that we are seeing with other big food brands. The items are ‘healthier’ in the school, but they are really just serving as a fantastic marketing tool for Pepsico and the like. Check out Michael Moss’s video which explains a little more.
