We are big fans of yoga at Wellness Warrior and we were saddened to learn of the passing of B.K.S. Iyengar, the creator and teacher of the style of yoga that bore his name.
He is also accredited as one of the major teachers who brought yoga to the ‘western world.’ Whether you practice Iyengar yoga (or any yoga) or not, we can all appreciate the passion and insight that he brought into the wellness community over the past 70 years.
Tara Parker-Pope of the New York Times conducted an interview with one of his former students, who praised his ability to present yoga as something for everyone:
I think one of his main contributions was making yoga accessible, but also the degree of attention he gave to the practices of asana, or postural yoga, and to pranayama, the breathing exercises, was immense. He was also an amazing communicator. He was constantly finding new ways to help his students increase their capacity to be aware of what was going on in their bodies and minds.”
The folks at Mind Body Green compiled ten great quotes from Iyengar, all of which are worth reading. Here are just a few:
"Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured."
"Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they're meant to be."
"I always tell people, live happily and die majestically."
