Please Pass the Broccoli Leaves

Watch out kale and spinach, there’s a new sheriff in town and it goes by the name of Broccoli Leaf. For years now kale and spinach have reigned supreme in the kitchen with foodies and nutritionists alike. But all that might be about to change with the introduction of broccoli leaves to the scene. After all, if we’re already using the broccoli florets in our meals, why not incorporate the leaves as well?

A recent article in AshleyKoff RD – Better Nutrition, Simplified, shares one source of its growing popularity ...

…when the Nunes farmer family (4 generations) took to juicing, they looked no further than their backyard and “discovered” this “new” vegetable – which had literally been staring at them for decades. It was love at first sip...”

Others eaters have also taken to using this tasty green, sautéing it or adding it to baked dishes, salads, and so on. The taste has been compared to a sweet pea with a slightly sweet, fresh flavor. And don’t even get us started on all the amazing nutrients packed into these lovely leaves. They even beat out kale, packing a punch of calcium and vitamin A, not to mention your daily dose of vitamin C.

The AshleyKoff article goes on to explain that this simple green is also full of...

Glucosinolates: plant compounds hailed as the heros of detoxification – the 3 glucosinolates – which aid all stages of detox including at the genetic level – to impart benefits including cancer-fighting & hormone-helping” and “Kaempferol – a rich source of the flavonoid that helps the body take on allergens and toxins more effectively offering anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial benefits.”

Not sure about y’all, but we can’t wait to give this new green a try! Pass the broccoli leaves, please!
