The first in a long and inspiring list of responsibilties laid out for Dr. Olivier De Schutter in 2008 as he took over the job of UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, reads as follows:
To promote the full realization of the right to food and the adoption of measures at the national, regional and international levels for the realization of the right of everyone to adequate food and the fundamental right of everyone to be free from hunger so as to be able fully to develop and maintain their physical and mental capacities;
To do this, he has spent the last six years promoting small-scale local farming, debunking the myth that producing more food is the only way to “feed the world,” advocating for healthy whole food diets, encouraging accountability for food companies, rejecting junk food, working towards a living wage within all aspects of the food supply chain and plenty of other progressive and sustainably minded measures.
