We’ve been known to consult the Lexicon of Sustainability from time to time at Wellness Warrior. It’s a go-to source for understanding concepts like food literacy, true cost accounting, or really any other ideas that are shaping the sustainable food movement. If you haven’t been turned on to their Food List we couldn’t recommend it more highly. Every week, it delivers new thematically based content curated by their diverse group of well-informed, and well-practiced visionaries.

Last week’s list was titled “Know Your Farmer” and included stories about farmers, guides, and suggestions of how you can support your local farm movement, essays on certifications and CSAs and more.

For instance, Southern Foodways Alliance contributed this short film about Dori Sanders, a third generation, African American peach farmer and landowner in South Carolina.

On living life in the country, tending to her farm and land and upkeeping a family tradition all within an undoubtedly oppressive and violent system, Dori paraphrases an excerpt from one of Frederick Douglass’s many powerful speeches:

If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.”

Mrs. Sanders farm has grown peaches for almost one hundred years.

Other themes highlighted this month include “Farming and Sustainability,” “Organic,” “Biodiversity and Monoculture,” “Food Waste” and more. Each page gives definitions for concepts on each topic that do a fabulous job of framing an understanding for readers. It’s yet another fabulous resource provided by the Lexicon’s impressive community.
