We’re certainly not shocked, but we are definitely appalled; the Big Food trade groups have officially sued Vermont over its GMO-labeling law. Back in May, when the law was signed, we knew that this was bound to happen and now the particulars are clear with the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), the Snack Food Association (SFA), International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) all banding together to try to stop the law. Once again we can see that these Big Food trade groups are attempting to put their profits over public opinion, and the consumer right to know. Quoting Ronnie Cummins, national director of the Organic Consumers Association, Nancy Remsen of the Burlington Free Press writes:
[Cummins added,] "Every U.S. citizen should be concerned when a multi-billion dollar corporate lobbying group sues in intimidate other states considering labeling laws.”
We know this is going to be a long fight in the courtroom, but we’ve got our fingers crossed that these GMO-supporting trade groups won’t get their way. If you are feeling moved to help make sure they don’t, check out Move.Org’s donation ask.
